Life out of the City

Last week we left the increasingly steamy capital city (it's now consistently in the mid to high 30's with the humidex making it feel over 50 degrees Celsius / 125 Fahrenheit -- now that's hot!) for a little sojourn up north, in Chiang Rai province.

We went to visit, Nu, one of Jan's participants from his Canada World Youth days. Nu hails from a "smart" village about 15 km south of Chiang Rai city. The village is "smart" because everything is organised based on the principles of sustainability and cooperation - there are groups and co-ops for just about everything imaginable (you should have seen the house wives cabaret!). And honestly, the place does feel healthy and thriving.

A very "smart" village!

A very funny cow variety in the "smart" village (Nu's uncle raises these odd gals).

At the moment we have the great pleasure of being on the world-travel itinerary of a famous pair of Toronto Poles, Marcin and Malwina. Nu took us, and our Japanese-Mexican friend, Mio, to visit stunning white temples and ELEPHANTS.

This is us (minus Mio) in front of Wat Rong Khun, a temple in all-white and mirror mosaic, the lifetime project of artist Chalermchai Kositpipat.

If you're in northern Thailand and want to cavort with elephants, you can't do better than going to Baan Ruam Mit near Chiang Rai. The village has about 40 elephants, many of them hanging around waiting for you to feed them, visit them and of course, ride them.

Here's M&M and their large friend.
