Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah!

On Christmas Eve we finally decided to go out and celebrate the holidays, to give ourselves a real treat! We headed out the the fancy Vegetarian Cottage restaurant, a wonderful little place hidden deep in a residential neighbourhood in the north of Bangkok.

This one looks a little set up, as it was --
but once in awhile we need one of these.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah to all!

Now, for those of you not familiar with mock-vegetarian fare, it's absolutely incredible what sorts of flavours and textures can be attained using only vegetarian ingredients. Jan's always said that this type of food isn't really meat, and you shouldn't try to imagine that it is, but the creations often are amazingly tasty and flavourful in their own right. For us, it amounted to a perfect quiet romantic evening.

Our menu:
Baked garlic mushroom toast with cheese
Shark Fin Soup
Duck à l'Orange
and...

Chicken in Thai Black Pepper Sauce

Reader, lest you think that the french fries apparent in the above photo make for some sub-class fare, be aware that they are almost unavailable outside of Western fast-food outlets -- which we do not frequent. They too were a treat that evening.

Now, it wasn't quite a traditional Polish Christmas, but given the circumstances we did quite well. It was a cut above the idea of Boiled Chicken stuffed with Pad Thai, one of the original possibilities. :)

Oh, we almost forgot to mention. See the edge of Jan's glass in the bottom right corner of the shot. That's a Virgin Mary - all in the spirit of Christmas.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah to all!
