Reporters Without Borders Publishes 2006 Global Press Index

Every year we read this document, the annual Reporters Without Borders Worldwide Press Freedom Index with rapt fascination. See a preview in this image:

To quote the report:

“Unfortunately nothing has changed in the countries that are the worst predators of press freedom,” the organisation said, “and journalists in North Korea, Eritrea, Turkmenistan, Cuba, Burma and China are still risking their life or imprisonment for trying to keep us informed. These situations are extremely serious and it is urgent that leaders of these countries accept criticism and stop routinely cracking down on the media so harshly.

Canada ranks 16th. It is also interesting to note that there are five post-communist nations in the top 15 -- clearly these countries have been eager to get the decades of media control far behind them. The Epoch Times found itself mentioned in the Asia summary:

Taiwan (43rd) continues to move up and is now just behind Spain. Hong Kong (58th) fell back though some of its media continued to be very free and the Internet is not censored at all. Vandalism against the daily paper Epoch Times and a parcel bomb sent to a journalist made some fear further attacks.

Please take a look, much fascinating information is contained within!

Hey, good news for Internet users in China! Chinese government official says that there is absolutely no censorship of the Internet in China!

Link: News.com article.

Um, excuse me while I choke.

The same guy also says "Some people say that there are journalists in China that have been arrested. We have hundreds of journalists in China, and some of them have legal problems. It has nothing to do with freedom of expression."

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Except I shouldn't be laughing. Legal problems.
