When people ask us where we're from the answer isn't always obvious. Canada? Thailand? Toronto? Bangkok? Poland? A suitcase? So much depends on who's asking and where we're standing. However, no matter what, no matter how far away we are or how frequently we come back, the old adage holds true: You can take the girl (boy) out of Canada, but you can't take Canada out of the girl (boy).

When Cindy was a CUSO in Thailand, a clause in her contract listed all of the holidays CUSOs were entitled to take off. Canada Day was included (being a Canadian organisation). I'm pretty sure nobody ever refused to show up for work on a random Wednesday in early July because it was unthinkable to labour on such an important day. But occassionally when you live abroad, you'll be writing down the date and suddenly notice that you almost missed an important birthday -
