The Marvelous Land of Newfoundland

Last week, we took our moms to Newfoundland. Some might think it an odd road trip quartet, but the trip was a huge success!

Newfoundland is just incredible - if you've never been there GO! It's a land of breathtaking landscapes - from rock cliff to tundra to cottage country - and more characters than a Robert Altman film. Along the way we met Albert, the 69-year-old retired fisherman B&B keeper who served up unlimited fresh crab with his tales of four generations on the island for a bedtime "snack." Then there was vivacious Kimmy, one of the first three women Newfies permitted by the men to join an off-shore fishing crew. She regaled us with tales of life on the Rock for three solid hours while we trolled around Twillinggate looking for whales. Fascinating to hear about the state of the fisheries practically from the fish's mouth. Basically it's a study on how to use public policy to get fisherfolk out of the water.

The rocks around the quaint island-town of Twillinggate.
It's as Newfoundland as Newfoundland gets.

Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve.
A foggy view of some of the 24,000 Northern gannet,
20,000 black-legged kittiwake, 20,000 common murre,
and 2,000 thick-billed murre you can see there.

On the way to Gros Morne National Park.
Stunning country!
