Ukraine on the Brain

After Israel Jan found himself in Ukraine, giving an introductory journalism workshop. He spent several days in Kiev, but also travelled to the small town of Ostroh, to do a seminar on Ethical Journalism at the renowned Ukrainian university, Ostroh Academy.

After developing the principles of ethical journalism and examining several case studies, the students debated the ethics of Wang Wenyi's interruption of Hu Jintao's speech in Washington. Students overwhelmingly felt that Wenyi's actions were ethical, as they drew the world's attention to a topic that was being ignored -- an important role for an ethical journalist to play. Still, we wouldn't recommend similar actions in the future...

The Ostroh students were very hospitable, taking the visitors on a tour of the town. A large, derelict Synagogue stands in the center of town.

Back in Kiev, Jan was able to discover the beauty of Ukraine under clear skies for the duration of the visit, but also in Kiev's fascinating Underground. Cost per trip: about 20 US cents.

Weddings abound in Kiev in the springtime, and under the sunny skies many photo shoots of happy couples were seen. Jan took some shots, too.

Jan also had the chance to visit with one of his students from his last Poland-Ukraine Canada World Youth program. Snap-happy Vitaliy was an excellent guide to the sights of Kiev.

And finally for a bit of inspiration: the famous stone that marks the start of the Orange Revolution in Kiev, in Kontraktova square. Supporters first gathered here to start the peaceful protests that ended communist rule in Ukraine.
