Behind the Lens

Jan got a new camera the other week. He upgraded from the bottom of the very fine heap, Canon digital Rebel, to a solid mid-pile Canon 20D. We've been experimenting with it a lot since then... Here are some results.

Who's behind the lens? Cindy reflects on what this new beast can do.

A rare spotting.

Sometimes you have to lie and wait in the bush for days to pull off a shot like this one - but in the end it's worth it!

The Lotus Arts Group - in full bloom.

Last Saturday, we went with our dads and Jan's dad's family to a Food Fair Fundraiser for the Rescue Falun Gong Orphans campaign at Toronto's Distillery District. There was great entertainment and delicious, wonderfully cheap food provided by quality restaurants from all over the city! This cause is near and dear to our hearts since two of our closest friends in Bangkok, a dad and his 4 year old daughter, lost their wife and mom after she was beaten, force-fed and tortured, and finally fell from a second story window. Dad didn't know what had happened at the time since he was in a forced labour camp himself, but at 2.5 years old Kaixin saw her mother's body. Fortunately, Kaixin -- meaning "little happy" in Chinese -- still has a father and generally lives up to her name, but her dad tells us that she still cries most nights for her mom and asks when they're going to go home. They're currently on the UN High Commission for Refugees wait list for patriation to a third country.
